Pellet burning stoves (and for the purposes of this post, pellet burning inserts) are one of the newer things that are in the fireplace and stove business. That is not to say that they are not a mature technology, because they certainly are. Pellet burning stoves first emerged in the 1980's. I would say that they have aged a little bit better than parachute pants and leg warmers. They burn wood pellets typically made out of sawdust from lumber products companies such as sawmills, wood floor producers, and other similar operations. They take the sawdust and push it through an extrusion die which produces the wood pellets that can be used to heat your home.
Pellet burning stoves produce a very good heat that is easily spread through the living space and is relatively quiet. They are also usually thermostatically controlled, making it very easy to maintain a consistent temperature in the living space. They can also be quite attractive and can be used as a focal point in a living space as demonstrated by the Roma in the above photo. It is also fairly easy to load and operate a pellet stove when comparing it to a wood burning stove.
Typically the people that are interested in using a pellet stove come from one of a couple of backgrounds. The first is that they have burned wood for years, but are now looking for something easier to operate and load, as well as something that is cleaner by not having to bring firewood through the home to place in the stove or fireplace. It helps that a pellet stove generates a good amount of heat. It man not generate quite as much as a wood burning stove, but it still generates a very good quantity of heat.
The other typical pellet stove customer is someone that has been heating their house with electricity or gas. When the temperatures get extremely cold, electricity and gas can be an expensive way to heat your home. Pellet stoves offer more economy than electricity or gas normally does.
